Edmond Jabès - Introduction –
Edmond Jabès was a famous Jewish poet and writer, who is also one of the most renowned literary persons to practice writing in French after the Second World War. Edmond Jabès was born in a Jewish Italian family and was brought up in Egypt. In Egypt he was given traditional colonial education of France. In 1952 he received the prestigious title of Knight of the Legion of Honor for his excellence in literature.

Several of the family members of Jabes even today live in many parts of the United States like New York and Washington D.C. as well as different other regions of the world. But only few family members bear the family name of Jabes.

Early life of Edmond Jabès -
In 1956 when the Jewish people were driven out of Egypt during the Suez Crisis, Edmond Jabès escaped to Paris. He has earlier gone to Paris during the 1930s. The surrealists there became his friends but he was never a part of their faction. In 1967 he became a citizen of France and that same year was honored as a French writer to submit his work at Montreal’s World Exposition. Other writers who delivered their work at the World Exposition were Claud Levi-Strauss, Jean Paul Sartre and Albert Camus.

Recognition of the literary works by Edmond Jabès -
More praises were received gradually by Edmond Jabès the 1972 Prix des Critiques and a payment as an official in1986 Legion of Honor. The National Guard Prize for Poetry of France was handed over to him in 1987. Edmond Jabès was cremated after some days of his demise at the Pere Lachaise cemetery. Edmond Jabès passed away when he was 78. Works of Edmond Jabès -

Edmond Jabès is famous worldwide for his poetry books. These books were time and again published in sets of several volumes. Rosmarie Waldrop, main English translator of Edmond Jabès’ works has translated almost fourteen of these volumes. Kabbalah and mysticism of the Jews are frequently referred to in these works.

English translations of the works by Edmond Jabès have been made by Rosemarie Waldrop. Some of these English translations comprise ‘The Book Of Questions’, ‘The Book of Dialogue’ and ‘The Book of Resemblances’. Selected works on Edmond Jabès include “Interview with Edmond Jabes” and “Edmond Jabes and the Question of the Book” by Jacques Derrida.
