Life of Sonallah Ibrahim
Born in the year 1937, Sonallah Ibrahim was born to a high-level civil servant. He passed out from Cairo University in law and drama. While working as a journalist, Sonallah Ibrahim was imprisoned for his extreme political view points.
After he was released from the jail he resumed his journalism work; however, soon Sonallah Ibrahim moved to Berlin and joined a new agency. Later, he underwent a course of cinematography. It was only in the year 1974 that he returned back to Egypt, his birth place. Since then he completely got engaged with writing.
Works of Sonallah Ibrahim
He is renowned all across the globe for his novels, shorts stories as well as some well known children’s books. Apart from writing he was also engaged in the work of translation, where he translated varied books into Arabic. In most his novels, Sonallah Ibrahim used to include excerpts from magazines, newspapers, and several political sources. The principal reason for incorporating these was to enlighten the mass about the different social and political issues.
‘That Smell’ was the first creation of Sonallah Ibrahim. In this book his imprisonment has been briefly illustrated. This book, consisting of several short stories, showcased excellent Egyptian literature. Some of his other creations were Beirut… Beirut, The Committee, Cairo from Edge to Edge, Memoirs of the Oasis Prison and Warda. ‘Memoirs of the Oasis Prison’ is Sonallah Ibrahim’s last book and is similar in thoughts to his first book, to a great extent.
