The Byzantine Empire era is one of those historiographical term which has been used since the 19th century for the Roman empire to describe its ups and down. Constantinople was the capital of the Byzantine Empire era. It is also known as the eastern Roman empire. Some of its western contemporaries knew it as the empire of the Greeks because of Greek being the
dominant language.
There is no record by the historians when exactly the Byzantine empire era of the Roman history began. One of its emperor Constantine I who reigned from the year 306 to337 was the first "Byzantine Emperor".Then he shifted his imperial capital in the year 324 AD from Nicomedia to Byzantium. It was renamed as Constantinople, or Nova Roma, was known as the "new Rome" in English .
The Byzantine Empire era was known as the eastern Roman empire, because it was the part of the Roman Empire. It covered many countries of the world. The kingdom of the Byzantine empire era included parts of Europe, the Middle East, and northern part of Africa. The of people Byzantine empire era called themselves Romans although they were the descendants of various ancient cultures and they they spoke was Greek.
Infact the word Byzantine,has been derived from "Byzantium,". It is a Greek name for a city on the Bosphorus. The Greeks were the first one to occupy this city during the mid-600's BC. The Greek culture continued to influence it after the region became part of the Roman Empire, in the year 100's BC.
But when the Roman emperor Constantine shifted his capital from Rome to Byzantium and renamed it as Constantinople which is known as Istanbul today, in the year 330 AD. This is the time when the Byzantine empire era began. It lasted over one thousand years and finally saw its downfall in the year 1453, when it was attacked by the Ottoman Turks. They finally conquered Constantinople and renamed it as Istanbul.

For almost eleven thousand years, the Byzantines ruled over the many countries. The extensive expansion and prosperity of the kingdom was balanced by internal religious body. As the kingdom was frequently attacked by the Ottomans turks. Finally it could not withstand the attacks from the enemies. Even though the Byzantine empire culture no longer remained but it left a strong influence even its downfall.
Speaking about Egypt, the Byzantine empire era left a strong impact on the Egyptian culture. During the reign of Byzantine, there was much prosperity in Egypt.
