Cinema in Egypt is a popular media. Since the year 1930, the film industry in Egypt has been making good motion pictures. The Egyptian film industry is situated in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. In fact, Egypt is the leader of the Arabian film industry. Experts consider the time between 1940 to 1950 as the golden age of cinema in Egypt.

However, the great star Omar Sheriff ruled as the supreme indisputable hero of the cinema world of Egypt. His former wife Fatin Hamana was a very popular heroine of the Arab cinema. For the production of good cinema a master director even needs good story. During the golden age of the cinema in Egypt many great writers have written scripts for the movies. These writers include Naguib Mahfouz and Tawfiq Al Hakim. Many internationally famed directors also emerged in the Egyptian film scenario at this time. One of them was Youssef Chahine. He gained worldwide reputation as a film director.
Cinema in Egypt draws a good number of spectators even today. However, gradually the standard of the movies is declining in order to make huge profits. Even the Egyptian government heavily taxes the film making industry. The burden of tax is also one of the factors responsible for the degradation of the standard of the films made in Egypt.

These days the Egyptian film industry has got its new superstar. This new superstar is Adel Iman. He is a comedian actor. The role of this comedian has even been rebuked by the government of Egypt. Adel Iman's acting in a political satire has earned the wrath of the government of Egypt on more than single occasion. But his acting has been appreciated by the regular movie goers in Egypt. Other major film stars of the present day Egyptian cinema are Mahmoud Abdul Aziz, Ahamd Zaki and Yusra.
