The Egyptian Film industry flourished with the introduction of contemporary ideas. Egypt started making films when the Arab countries where still dealing with war and unstable political situation. The funding was provided by the various industries. The Egyptian films of the 1970s bear evidence of the progress that Egyptian cinema had made.
In 1959 The Ministry of culture in Egypt set up a institute of Film to groom professionals interested in the film line. The Higher Film Institute groomed and polished the skills of aspiring film directors. Under the leadership of Nasser, Egypt scored above all other Arab nations culturally. The Egyptian film industry came to be known as the “Hollywood on the Nile”. Egyptian films of the 1970s where more widely watched by residents of the Gulf states. Television was introduced and this enabled them to view a lot of the movies. Television entered the gulf states in 1971 and this impacted the Film industry of Egypt.
The actors during those times where highly paid due to the distribution of films in the Gulf states. According to the popularity of stars the budget and sell of films where decided. Egyptian cinema had become popular in Saudi Arabia. In the 1970's, Egyptian films started using tobacco at an alarming rate. In fact according to the statistics of a study tobacco usage reached its height during the 1970s. It was stated that approximately 428 scenes in Egyptian films of the 1970s had shown the use of tobacco. The open door policy as set up by Anwar Sadat increased the inflow of capitalism from the west. Many tobacco manufacturing companies entered the Egyptian market. Many of the 1970's Egyptian movies had criminals using “shisha” to inhale drugs.
The 1970's started off the equality movement through its films. There was no bias against women smoking. Filmmakers during those times often showed men and women smoking. Smoking among women came to be accepted socially. Harami El Waraka was a Egyptian film that was directed by Ali Reda and released in 1970. Nar el shouq was a drama that was released in the same year. The star cast included Shabah, Howaida, Rushdy Abaza, Hussein Fahmy.

The next year two more films were released. Thartharh fawqa al – Nil, directed by Hussein Kamal and El Khait El Rafeeh, which had Mahmoud Yassin and Faten Hamama. Both the movies where dramas. Some other Egyptian films of the 1970s are listed below :
