Akhmim is one of the cities of Egypt. This city is located in the Upper Egyptian Sohag Governorate.
Grekks called this city by many names like Panpolis, Chemmis and Khemmis. The city is located on the banks of river Nile. Akhmim is situated on the eastern bank of the river Nile. This city is located 4 miles northeast of Sohag.
In ancient times the name of this city was Khent-min, Apu or Ipu. Greek historian Herodotus mentioned this city in his writings. He has mentioned a temple in this city dedicated to Perseus. In the Christian era this place was known Shmin or Khmin. Numerous monasteries were present in many parts of the city. Many myths are also associated with the history of this city in Egypt. This city was the home to some of the great magicians of the country. A mythological serpent is belived have been resident in this city. This supernatural being was considered as a demon by the Christian and an angel by the Muslims.
Modern Akhmim is a big town located on the eastern banksof the river Nile. The city is one of the largest in Egypt. In the year 1907 this Egyptian city has a total population of 23,795 people. At least 1/3 people of Akhmim were copts or Egyptian Christian.
