The city of Alexandria is a major city in Egypt. Alexandria was a well known seat of learning and knowledge in the antique past. This city underwent major upheavals historically and economically. A brief history of Alexandria:
In 331 BC, Alexander the Great is said to have founded the city of Alexandria which was made the capital of Egypt. The city was under continuous arrest by intruders and it was under riots, which ruined it economically. It came under the influence of Christianity and Islam and also seized by King Chosroes II of Persia. Omar Caliph drove out the Persian King and established Islam. After a state of decline since then in the 18th century Alexandria again revived economically and culturally.
Places of interest:
A great blend of Roman, Greek and Egyptian architecture can be seen in Alexandria's Catacombs of Kom el- Shukafa. This was the graveyard of a certain religious community, discovered only in the 1900. The Park of Montaza palace is also of historical interest. Now partially a luxury hotel and Museum it used to be the summer abode of the royal family. Eastern Harbor in Alexandria is made famous by the discoveries of Cleopatra's palaces and very old buildings, located deep into the earth. In the Graeco-Roman Museum, coins, artifacts, pottery dating back to 300 Bc-300 Ad are stocked. Midan el-Tahrir can be termed as the centre of activities consisting of the Law Courts, Anglican st Mark's Church, the old Exchange and a statue of Mohammed ali.
The Nuza Gardens is situated in the southeast of Alexandria, a beautiful garden that also has a zoo. It is impossible to rule out the Pharos, the island where the Lighthouse was located. Once being the seven wonders of the world this place is a great tourist site. Pompey's pillar is one of the most important ancient remains of Alexandria. This was built by Emperor Theodosius to mark the fall of paganism and triumph of Christianity and also the end of Serapeion.
