Damietta is a city of Egypt and is situated at the intersection between the River Nile and the Mediterranean Sea. It is approximately 200 kilometers from Cairo and 15 km from the Mediterranean. The city was known as Tamait in ancient Egypt. It has a long history but much of its history has been destroyed by the Nile River. This city was known to the Hebrews as Kaftoud.
History of Damietta:
Damietta became famous during the Crusades. The port was attacked by a fleet from Jerusalem in the year 1169. But Saladin was able to defeat the invaders. Then during the preparation of the fifth crusade in 1217, it was decided that Damietta will be the center of attack. According to the invaders, if they can manage to bring Damietta under control, then they will be able to conquer Egypt. Ultimately in the year 1219, the city was finally captured. The inhabitants were sold out as slaves and the mosques were converted to churches. The invaders were compelled to leave the city in the year 1221. Damietta was again attacked in 1249 by Louis IX of France. In the following year, the city was recaptured by the emirs. They reconstructed the city at the east bank if the river. From then on, Damietta became widely known for its trade and commerce activities.
It became a prosperous city with the development of maritime trade and crafts industry. The port has made it famous. It is primarily an industrial center and is renowned for its furniture, textile, sweets and leather industries. It is also famous for its rice mills and dairy product.

However, in recent times, the city has grown into a famous tourist spot of Egypt. If you want to enjoy a quite vacation in Egypt, then Damietta is the ideal place to be. You can visit Lake el Manzalla, which is located at the outside of the city. It is a huge lake where large number of birds gathers during the winter season. The types of migratory birds include pelicans, herons, flamingoes, spoonbills and storks.
Three beach resorts such as Baltim, Ras el-Bar and Gamassa are located at the other side of the River Nile. These resorts are at close proximity to the city. While on tour to Damietta, you are suggested to visit the old part of the city. There you will find Abu El-Maati Mosque. The religious place is encircled by an enormous cemetery. It was built during the Fatimid period.
