El Mansura is among the important cities of Egypt. It is considered to be a crucial business center contributing to the economy of the region. El Mansura is the primary city in the Governorate of Daqahliya and is situated in the eastern region of the Nile Delta. The city's architecture reflects western style of architecture. As history suggests, El Mansura was founded in the year 1221, by Sultan Malik el-Kamil. Damietta was lost to the crusaders and after that the sultan established the city of Mansura. A crusade led by Louis IX tried to invade El Mansura . Though he was succesful in crossing the Usmum Canal, when he reached into the city, he was captured and imprisoned by Sultan El-Moazzam Turanshah in 1250. There was tremendous bloodshed and destruction of ships finally leading to the final seizure.
Apart from being the hub of business and commerce, El Mansura as a tourist destination is notable. Certain historical sites in this town has always pulled the crowd as that marked an important phase in the development of the city. King Louis IX's prison is one of the tourist spots which pull the visitors. It is a small structure that is built near the Mosque of el-Muwafiq. The place which is famous being the location of the crusader camps is also a curiously visited. This is situated on the position from where the Bahr el-Sughayyar separates from the river Nile. Then there are the villas and palaces that have been built in eloquent style still catching our eye. The Touyel area is famous being the centre of such specimens. Shinnawi Palace is well known for its architectural brilliance which is based on Italian architecture.

In order to get a glimpse of the Egyptian lifestyle, you can visit the Al-Khawagat market. This market had a mixed population of Lebanese, Jews and Greeks in earlier days. In modern times one can find colourful galabiyas, shoes, cloth materials and potteries made of aluminium and brass. Vast ruins of temples and cities can be traced.
