It can be divided into two parts, namely, Ancient Esna and Modern Esna. The following lines provide a brief overview of these two regions.
Ancient City of Esna:
Esna is referred by Greeks as 'Latopolis' as the principle inhabitants in this region were Lates niloticus, a species of the freshwater fish, which was the largest of fifty two species that inhabited river Nile, during ancient time. The name is actually a tribute to this fish. The evidence of its inhabitance is remarkable in the several historical sculptures of this region, along with the symbols of goddess Neith, who is surrounded by ring or oval shield that indicate divinity or royalty. This fish was very sacred for the Egyptians and it was buried in cemetery, located at the west of Esna. A few temples are located in this region, which are Kom Mer, Temple of Esna along with a small temple in el-Dayr, a small village in northern Esna.
Modern city of Esna:
Modern region of Esna is marked by two barrage bridges in this region, among which one was built in the year 1906 and the other, Electricity Bridge, during 1990. One of the major tourist attractions in this region is the tourist oriented commercial quarter of Esna, consisting of a couple of streets that lead to the inland from corniche. Temple of Esna is also another prime tourist spot of this locality. This temple, 200 meters from river Nile, has been partially excavated and it is about 9 meters down from the street level. The beauty of this temple increases when the twilight falls over it everyday.
