Menia, also known as Menya, is an Egyptian city under the jurisdiction of Menia Governorate, which is situated on the western banks of river Nile. This beautiful city of tourist attraction is about 247 kilometers from Cairo, the capital city of Egypt. Located in Upper Egypt, Menia is one of the prime agricultural governorates of Egypt. You must have heard its name as it is famous for producing sugar and manufacturing of perfumes and soaps. Principle tourist attractions of Menia comprise of the beautiful monuments, namely, Bani Hassan Tombs, Tuna El-Gabal, Zawyet El-Mayiteen, Hermopolis, Temple of Speos Artemidos and Tell El-Amarna .
Zawyet El-Mayiteen is a major tourist attraction of Menia, which means the 'corner of the dead', in Arabic. The reason behind this name is its location near modern cemeteries of Christians and Muslims. These cemeteries are the largest ones all over the world. Pharaonic tombs are located all over the place in this region. As you enter this site, you will first discover the remains of a step pyramid, the function of which is unknown to modern civilization. Ruins of a temple of 18th Dynasty are also present in this place, which was built during Roman era. Hermopolis was actually an ancient city of Egypt, and the ruins of this city is located 40 kilometers south of Menia. This city was a prime destination for Thorth, the ibis headed god of wisdom, writing and healing. Previously it was known as Khumun, which was later associated to Greek god Hermes, thus naming it as Hermopolis.

Bani Hassan tombs are situated at 20 kilometers south of Menia, on the east banks of river Nile. There are about 39 rock cut tombs that belong to governors of Onyx Nome. These tombs have a few of the surviving murals of Middle Kingdom. Major tombs over here are Tomb of baqet, tomb of Khety, Tomb of Amenemhat and Tomb of Khnumhotep. Tuna El Gabal is a site of tombs that were made for humans along with a large hypogeal catacomb. Remains of Christian Basilica along with roman waterworks are also situated at this place. Temple of Speos Artemidos is actually a rock cut temple in the desert region. Queen Hatsheput built this temple, who rebuilt Egypt after its destruction. Seti I and Thutmose III, also associated their name with this temple as they also contributed to its make. Tell El Amarna, another tourist attraction near Menia, was actually a city in ancient time, which was built by Akhenaten, when he decided to stay here after leaving Thebes. The tombs of this place are notable ones for the inscription on its walls.
