The city of Qalyub, is quite close to the right bank of the river Nile. The most striking feature of the city is that it is reputedly considered to be constructed with materials taken from the ruins of the Heliopolis. The interesting thing to note about Heliopolis, was that it was one of the most ancient cities of Egypt. Located a few miles away from Qalyub, it was considered to be the principal seat of the worship of the Sun God. In fact, the very meaning of Heliopolis happens to be the town of the sun God in Greek.
It said that Qalyub, was at one time home to a 1,700 orchards. In fact, one of the important industries here, happens to be the caned food industry.
The El Zaher Bebers Mosque is located here. King El Zaher Bebers was known as a brave and adventurous king. It is during his reign that some fine buildings were built. The mosque with its well arched dome being one such building.
The El_Shekh awad mosque built by a judge, who served the Sultan of the city by the same name, was commemorated after his death. He knew all the religious sayings by heart. After his death the Shawarbias constructed a mausoleum in the mosque itself to pay homage to this great soul. In fact, is they who took a special interest in the maintenance of the building.
It is belived that the Holy Virgin is supposed to have visited Egypt. The lady virgin church in Koom Ashfeen was built in respect to this visit. A visit to Qalyub, enables visitors to pay their respects to this holy spot.
The beginnings of the history of the church can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Tourists visiting the church will get to view the Bazelic style of designing churches. There are a group of rare icons housed at this church.
The city is steeped in history. For it was as an important center of resistance against French invaders.
The Barrage of Abo El-Monga Canal was built to help in the irrigation of surrounding lands. This was during 506 AD. A celebration is held year after the river Nile floods its banks.
Qalyub is easily accessible from Cairo International Airport. There are a number of flights plying to Cairo from distant destinations in the world. You can fly to Cairo from Birmingham International Airport in England.
