About Mawlid
Mawlid is one of the popular festivals in Egypt. Also spelled as Mawlud or Milad, the term Mawlid is referred to the observance of the birth of a holy figure, especially the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Mawlid is observed in Rabi' al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar.
Unlike most of the Islamic countries, Mawlid is the time to celebrate the birthdays of local Sufi saints and not only restricted to the celebration of the birth of Muhammad. A number of people throughout the country come to celebrate this festival of Egypt. Along with a number of rituals and programs, one of the most popular custom of the festival of Mawlid is the feast that is conducted by groups of people. They enjoy the whole day in company with each other.
When is it celebrated?
Mawlid is celebrated in the month of Rabi' al-awwal in the Islamic calendar. The Shais observe Mawlid on the 17th of the month which coincides with the birth date of their sixth Imam, Ja'far al-Sadiq. On the other hand, Sunnis observe Mawlid on the 12th of the month. As the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, therefore the date of Mawlid in each year may vary in the Gregorian calendar.
How is Mawlid Celebrated?
Mawlid brings lot of joy and merrymaking in Egypt. The people from every part of the country celebrate this Islamic festival with vigor. During the festival, all people come to enjoy their time with the festive mood. The celebration of Mawlid includes a public sermon and a feast. Though some Islamic fundamentalists consider Mawlid as idolatrous, the festival of Mawlid is widely celebrated throughout Egypt and other Islamic countries.
People of Egypt start celebrating Mawlid since the very early hours. The meet with each other and wishes for each other as well. They go for the food with the family members or friends. One can find several items in the menus of the feast of that day.

During the Mawlid, the streets of the Egypt get decorated. The large street processions are held. The mosques as well as the home are also decorated. In various places of the country charity and food is distributed. Stories about the life of Muhammad are also narrated with recitation of poetry by the children. The scholars and the Poets also recite Qaida al-Burda Sharif in the special gathering organized to celebrate the festival of Mawlid.
