The country of Egypt has a number of festivals in their calendar. Some of them are secular and some of them are religious. But all the festivals in Egypt bring a lot of joy and cheer to the people of the country. As Egypt is a Muslim country, majority of the Egypt festivals are Islamic as well. The people of Egypt celebrate Ramadan during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar in order to honor the time when the holy Qu'ran was revealed to the prophet Mohammed. Ramadan is one of the most popular festivals in Egypt that brings a lot of joy and happiness to the people of Egypt. The followers of he Islamic faith fast for the entire month during Ramadan without any food or drink or smoking from the sunrise to sunset. Though there are some exceptions for the small children who are under 10, the pregnant women, and the nursing women and the elderly.

The Ramadan in Egypt is completely different from the other parts of the world. It brings some more color and fun to the country of ancient civilization. Apart from the rituals that are practiced during the Ramadan, there are some other social habits of the Egyptians that make the Ramadan of Egypt something different from the other parts of the world.

When it is celebrated?

Ramadan is an one-month long festivals in Egypt which is celebrated throughout the country. But there is no exact time of the festival as its timings varies. Ramadan is the month that follows the lunar calendar, which is the basis of the Islamic calendar. Depending upon the birth of the moon, which are detected with the help of various astronomical calculations, the time of Ramadan is set. Sometimes Ramadan falls in the summer, and sometimes it falls in the winter.

How is Ramadan Celebrated?

The principal ritual of Ramadan festival is the fasting which restricts the followers to take any food or drink starting from the sunrise to sunset. You cannot also smoke during this time. Followers continue this for the entire duration of Ramadan, i.e. for the entire month. There are only two meals are allowed daily.

The first meal, called "Iftar" is taken just after the sunset, while the second meal, called "Sohour" is taken before the dawn. However, one can choose the time of the second meal according to his preference, but surely not after the sunrise.

During the Ramadan festival, most of the monuments and other tourists attraction sites are kept open till 3 pm. Though some of the less popular sites may be closed a bit earlier, within 2 pm. People meet with each other during Ramadan wish for each others well-being.
