About Sham en Nisim

Sham en Nisim is one of the most ancient festivals, not only in the country of Egypt, but the whole world. The Egyptians celebrate this festival during the spring season. For more than thousand years, Sham en Nisim has been celebrated by the people of Egypt, and all sections of society participate in the celebrations. This popular festival is usually celebrated between the months of Baramouda (April) and Bashans (May), just after Easter Sunday. Literally, Sham en Nisim signifies "breathing the air" or "sniffing the air". The roots of the festival can be located to 2700 BC. The whole country of Egypt enjoys a public holiday on this day, and every year, the day of the festival usually falls on the Monday that follows the Coptic Easter Sunday.

According to information from the Egyptian State Information Service, the name of this festival has been derived from the country's harvest season, "Shamo". Shamo means "a day of creation". Plutarch's annals mention that the ancient people of the country had the habit of offering lettuce, salted fish, and onions to their gods and deities on Sham en Nisim. As this spring festival concurred with the spring equinox, the ancient Egyptians believed that the day indicated the start of creation. Thus, the day of the festival was not fixed, but was announced each year prior to the feasting at the Great Pyramid's feet.

The feast of "Shamo" connotes "the renewal of life". The first celebration of the festival happened during the latter period of the 3rd dynasty.

Celebration of Sham en Nisim

This festival is regraded as the festival of Egypt, and for this reason both Muslims as well as Christians participate in the celebrations. The essence of the festival is more national than religious. On this particular day, the people of Egypt spend their time by organizing picnics in places associated with greenery. The food taken on Sham en Nisim includes Fissekh, lettuce, green onion, Lupini Beans and boiled colored eggs.
