Book of Gates

Book of Gates – Introduction –

The Book of Gates is a holy text of Ancient Egypt, which belongs to the New Kingdom. This sacred Egyptian text tells the story of transition of a recently departed soul to the next world. This passage matched up the trip of the sun god (Ra) across the underworld in the night hours. The departed soul is needed to go by a number of gates at separate phases of its journey to the next world. The Book of Gates is a planetary article, which describes the residents and architecture of the underworld, which is known as Tuat in Egyptian mythology.

The gates in the Book of Gates -

Each of these gates is connected to a separate goddess and needs the identification of the specific quality of the goddess by the departed soul. Implication of the Book of Gates is the passage of few people through harmless conditions and some other through troublesome states in a ‘lake of fire’.

Human races in the Book of Gates -

Reference of various human races (which Egyptians know) is the main part of this holy text of Book of Gates. These human races are segregated into four types – ‘Asiatics’, ‘Libyans’, ‘Nubians’ and ‘Egyptians’. These categories are mentioned in the process of passing to the next world.

Images and content connected with the Book of Gates -

The images and content related to the Book of Gates are found in numerous burial places, which belong to the New World and comprise all the tombs of the pharaohs from Horemheb to Ramasses VII. The illustrations and texts have also been discovered in Sennedjem’s tomb.
Sennedjem was an Egyptian artisan who lived in Deir el-Medina, a village in Egypt. This village was home to craftsmen and artists, who constructed tombs for the pharaohs during the New Kingdom.

The goddesses, who have been mentioned in the Book of Gates have individual titles. They also wear clothes of different colors. But they are the same and have a star with five points over their heads. Mention of majority of these goddesses is found in the Book of Gates and not anywhere else in Egyptian mythology. Thus the Book of Gates is supposed to be written only to find out the time during the night hours. The goddess at a gate is considered to be an illustration of the star that appears primarily in that hour of the night.
