Death

Death is always related with Egyptian mythology. Several customs along with different superstitious views are related with death in Egypt. Egyptians practices several rituals for the rest of the soul and body in its afterlife. The Egyptians believes in the vitality of the body and soul after death.

Reunion of ka and ba in afterlife:

According to the beliefs of the Egyptians the union of the body and soul or ka and ba is necessary after death. This reunion paves the way of the ka to gain its place in the heaven among the stars. Mummification and embalming are the two most major rituals that are needed for this reunion of the ka and ba and also to preserve the identity of an individual in life after death.

Mummification:

The process of mummification is one of the most interesting and major part of the death rituals of Egypt. To prevent decomposition of the dead bodies and also to preserve the bodies in tombs of sun- baked bricks or wood the ancient Egyptians started mummification.

In this procedure with the help of incision in abdomen the inner organs of the dead are removed. The brain of the dead body is also scooped out through the nostril. Before scooping out the thin bone is broken. Natron is used to wash and pack the holes of the body. After covering the entire body with Natron it is left to dry.

Resin is also used to coat the inside and outside of the dead bodies after the Natron has been removed. The bodies are also wrapped with bandage of linen and Talismans and religious amulets are used to enclose the body. The stomach, liver, lungs and intestine of the dead bodies are preserved in canopic jars.
These are believed to be protected by the Egyptian deities, the Four Sons of Horus. It has often been seen that the organs being wrapped with linen are placed inside the mummy. Only the heart of the dead is left with the body because the heart is believed to be the soul's home.

Along with human beings mummification is also done to the bodies of animals like baboon, falcon, Nile perch, cat, crocodile and ibis. Death is thus, one of the mysterious parts of the Egyptian life that encompasses human as well as animal world.
