26th Dynasty

The Saite ruled the 26th Dynasty in Egypt. The 26th Dynasty is considered the last dynasty in Egypt before the conquests of the Persian. The 26th Dynasty is a part of the Late period in the history of ancient Egypt during when the capital was Sais. The 26th dynasty originated from the 24th dynasty. Psammetichus I was declared the sole kind of Egypt. He was Bakenrenef’s great-grandson. During the time when the Assyrian Empire was caught in revolts and civil wars for control of the kingdom, Psammetichus severed ties with Assyrians and made alliance with Gyges who was the king of Lydia. He also recruited Carian and Greek mercenaries to resist the attacks by the Assyrians.

With the fall of the Assyrian Empire, Psammetichus and his successors made an attempt to take control over the Near East, but they were resisted by the Babylonians whose ruler was Nebuchadrezzar II. The Greek mercenaries assisted Apries was able to resist attack by the Babylonian for conquering Egypt. The Persians conquered Egypt and the Persian king Cambyses II exiled and executed Psammetichus III in Susa. This is one phase in the 26th dynasty.

The first ruler of 26th dynasty was Psammetikhos I even though his reign overlapped with the 25th Dynasty. The king is believed to have ruled around 664 through 610 BC. In the history of Ancient Egypt, this period is referred to as the Saite period in Egyptian history. In the 9th regnal year of Psammetikhos Egypt was taken over. He was named Psamtik I, by birth but the Greeks called him Psammetichus I. While in the throne, he was called Wah-ib-re which meant "Constant is the Heart of Re". The 26th Dynasty is sometimes placed in the Third Intermediate Period by many historians.
Psammetikhos I as well as his father, Necho I of Sais both were involved in intrigue with the Kushite ruler of Taharqo against the Assyrians. However they were captured by the Assyrians and Psammetikhos I was given the name Nabu-shezibanni when they returned Egypt and his father continued ruling the Delta. With the death of Necho in 664, Psammetikhos was declared the King of Egypt by the Assyrians. He made his daughter Nitokris the successor of the Adoratice of Amun. In his reign he brought the country under complete unity. He was succeeded by son Necho (Nekau) II. His son continued ruling Egypt and made further establishments.
