Psammetichus I was declared the sole kind of Egypt. He was Bakenrenef’s great-grandson. During the time when the Assyrian Empire was caught in revolts and civil wars for control of the kingdom, Psammetichus severed ties with Assyrians and made alliance with Gyges who was the king of Lydia. He also recruited Carian and Greek mercenaries to resist the attacks by the Assyrians.
With the fall of the Assyrian Empire, Psammetichus and his successors made an attempt to take control over the Near East, but they were resisted by the Babylonians whose ruler was Nebuchadrezzar II. The Greek mercenaries assisted Apries was able to resist attack by the Babylonian for conquering Egypt. The Persians conquered Egypt and the Persian king Cambyses II exiled and executed Psammetichus III in Susa. This is one phase in the 26th dynasty.
