28th Dynasty |
|
The 28th dynasty in Egypt is one of the many dynasties which are a part of the Late Period. The only ruler of the 28th dynasty was Amyrtaeus,. Amyrtaeus was a descendant of the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty kings or the Saite kings. He was one of the few Egyptian kings who revolted the invasion and the attacks of the Persians successfully. However, due to lack of evidence, there is not much that can be said about this king.
Amyrtaeus is believed to have been the grandson of Amyrtaeus of Sais. He was involved in a rebellion from the 465 to the 463 BC with the chief of Libyan who was called Inarus. Inarus was the grandson of Psametik III. The name of Amyrtaeus has been mentioned in the ancient Greek sources as well as from the Aramaic sources. This period in 28th dynasty is also mentioned well in the Demotic Chronicle.

Before he sat on the throne, Amyrtaeus was continuously revolting with Darius II in the 411 BC. This also led to a guerrilla action which took place in the western Nile Delta. This was around his home in Sais. After this Darius died and Amyrtaeus was declared the king in 404 BC. According to the 28th dynasty account of Isocrates, Artaxerxes had created an army after being commanded by Abrocomas. The army was assembled in Phoenicia for taking over Egypt.
However, Amyrtaeus soon started to have problems with his brother Cyrus the Younger. The Egyptians took full advantage of this and the Achaemenid rule was finally thrown off.

During the time when Amyrtaeus was ruling in the western Delta, he recognized the Elephantine king in the later part of 401 BC. According to The Elephantine papyri Upper Egypt was controlled by the Persian from the period between 404 and 400 BC and the power of Amyrtaeus was in the Deltaic region.
When there was an open war between Amyrtaeus and his successor, Nepherites I of Mendes he was defeated. He was deported to Memphis and executed there. Amyrtaeus was also believed to have violated the dictates of Law several times Amyrtaeus is believed to have reigned for six years. Due to lack of any guiding evidence in the form of ruins or enough texts, there is much debate over the exact happenings of this era.
