Archaic period

Archaic period, which is also referred to as the Early Dynastic Period, is one of the periods in the history of Egypt. This particular period is marked by the unification of the lower and Upper Egypt. It was by developing a centralized system of administration that the unification of the lower and Upper Egypt was ensured. Apart from this, a court- centered tradition was also developed in this united state of Egypt during the archaic period. The cultural values of the country were set by the aristocratic court in this period. The monarch was considered the fountainhead of the country.

During the Archaic period, the First as well as the Second Dynasty ruled Egypt, remaining in power till 2686 BCE. Memphis served as the capital during the reign of the first Dynasty. The First Dynasty spread its rule from the Nile Delta to the first cataract situated at Aswan. It is during the archaic period that art, literature, and Egyptian architecture reached its pinnacle.

Before Egypt got unified, the land was fraught with autonomous villages. The rulers founded a national administration. Royal governors were also appointed. The royal administrative buildings were somewhat like temples made of sandstone or wood. Formation of state in Egypt was basically indigenous in nature. The earliest hieroglyphs came into existence prior to the archaic period in Egypt. In accordance with Manetho, Menes was the first monarch. However, Hor-Aha was the earliest recorded monarch of the First Dynasty. But it was King Narmer who united the two lands in Egypt. His name is inscribed in the votive palette which is used for the purpose of smashing minerals for Kohl. The Egyptians use Kohl for outlining their eyes.
True that the kings were held in the position of God during this period, but the kings were subjected to birth, decay, death and growth. He was held in high esteem because he had the power to provide his subjects with food and security. Every year, the rulers in Egypt had to prove that they were physically well enough to rule his kingdom. The festival in which the kings had to prove their physical wellness was referred to as Sed Festival. In this festival the king was supposed to run a course for the particular region that he ruled. In case he failed to do that, he was sacrificed. This was the ritual in the archaic period of Egypt.
