The Old Kingdom marks one of the periods in Egypt’s rich history. This historical period commenced in 3rd millennium BC. It is during this period that Egypt reached the pinnacle of achievement. The Old Kingdom period in Egypt is one of the three Egyptian period that marks the great heights of civilization in the lower Nile Valley of Egypt.
The Third Dynasty reigned Egypt during Old Kingdom. In accordance with several renowned Egyptologists opined that the Memphite Seventh and Eighth Dynasties centralized their administration at Memphis during Old Kingdom. The First Intermediate Period characterized by disunity and cultural decline followed the Old Kingdom Period in Egypt.

It is said that a considerable number of Pyramids were constructed during the period of Old Kingdom. It is due to this reason that the Old Kingdom is also known as the "the Age of the Pyramids" in the history of Egypt. The pyramids constructed during Old Kingdom served as the burial sites of the pharaohs.
Djoser (2630–2611 BC) was the first remarkable monarch of the Old Kingdom. This king belonged to the Third Dynasty that ruled Egypt during Old Kingdom. This Egyptian kind ordered the construction of a pyramid at Necropolis in Memphis. V , the vizier of king Djoser, was an important personality during the rule of Djoser in Egypt.

It is in the era called Old Kingdom that the previously independent ancient states opf Egypt came to be referred as Nomes, administered only by the pharaoh. Subsequently the previous rulers were compelled to serve as governors or otherwise as tax collectors. In this period the Egyptians worshiped the pharaoh as god. They believed that the pharaoh ensured the annual flooding of the river Nile which was a necessity for the good growth of the crops.
The people of Egypt, during the old Kingdom, had the idea that the universe functioned in cycles, and the Pharaoh served to ensure the proper functioning of those cycles. They laos thought themselves to be specially chosen people, and as ‘the only true human beings on earth”
It is under the rule of the Fourth Dynasty that the Old Kingdom and its aristocratic power attained zenith. The started with the rule of Sneferu (2575–2551 BC). This king constructed three pyramids. The great Bent Pyramid constructed in Dahshur is Sneferu’s construction. The Red Pyramid in Dahshur was also constructed during the old Kingdom.
