Colonial Heads in Egypt

Before its independence, Egypt remained under the colonial ruler ship of France and England. Napoleon Bonaparte arrived in Cairo in the year in 1798. He continued to rule Egypt from 25th July 1798 to 22nd August 1799. Kleber was not as great a leader as Napoleon. When the Turks arrived on the doorstep of Egypt with British assistance, Kleber knew he would lose the battle! Surrender was the only option left for him at that stage.

The British could not manage a possession of the Egyptian soil by 1883. Edward Baldwin Malet took over Egypt as the controller general. Under his generalship, Egypt enjoyed a peaceful military life. The British navy would always remain on guard in the mouth of the Red Sea and Mediterranean Ocean, in order to protect Egypt from the clutches of other Colonial Heads in Egypt.

Some of the major British names who held the position of Colonial Heads in Egypt include Francis Reginald Wingate, Lord Allenby, John Eldon Gorst and Milne Cheetham. It was during the era of Colonial Heads in Egypt, that the Suez Canal was constructed. Construction of the Canal saved the British ships and trading ships to save a lot of time and fuel. Reaching the Asian ports became easier with the construction of the Suez Canal.
