Just as in any other nation of the world, there are a set of Public Holidays in Egypt, when all government organizations along with the banks across the country remain closed. Holidays can be classified under several heads in the country. As for instance, the national holidays, the Islamic holidays and the Christian holidays. Since Egypt is an Islamic state, apart from the national holidays the Islamic holidays are also considered among the Public Holidays in Egypt. During the public holidays, almost all concerns are closed, with Egyptians enjoying a great holiday. In most of the cases, the national holidays of Egypt are dates of national and secular importance, while the religious holidays mark some significant religious event.
The list of Egyptian Public Holidays for the calender year of 2008 include:
- 8th January- This day is better known as the Coptic Christmas Day in Egypt. One of the important Public Holidays in Egypt, this day is celebrated as the birth of Christ according to the Old Oriental Christian calender. On this day the Egyptian Coptic Christians, attend the mass at the Oriental Coptic Orthodox Church. Although, Islam happens to be the state religion, all important offices in Egypt remain closed.
- 10th January- One of the most celebrated Public Holidays in Egypt, this holiday is however movable. It marks the beginning of a New Year according to the Islamic lunar calender.
- 20th March- Another movable holiday, this is the day when all Islamic Egyptians will celebrate the birth of their revered prophet, Mohammad.
- 25th April- Celebrated in Sinai region of Egypt, this day marks the withdrawal of the Sinai troops from the Sinai peninsula. This is one of the Public Holidays in Egypt, which is confined to one particular zone.
- 28th Apr- Is the day for celebrating Coptic Easter, which is also known as Sham el-Nassim (Coptic Easter).
- 1st May- Celebrated with rest of the world as International Labor Day
- 18th June- Liberation Day celebrating evacuation of foreign troops in 1954
- 23rd July- Revolution Day
- 1st September- Marking the beginning for Ramadan.
- 11th September- New Year according to Coptic calender.
- 6th October- Armed Forces Day

- 1st -2nd October- This is one of the greatest festivities for the Muslim Egyptians. It is also known as Bairam Feast which marks the End of Ramadan or Ramzan
- 24th October- Suez Victory Day.
- 8th -9th December- Grand Feast Day.
- 23rd December- Victory Day.
- 29th December- Islamic New Year
It is significant that out of these, only some are national holidays where both government and private offices remain closed.
