Abu Rawash |
|
Abu Rawash is a prominent pyramid of Egypt. It is also known as Abu Roach. The pyramid is constructed 8 km north of Giza. It is the northern most site of the Memphite Necropolis. The pyramid got its modern day name from the nearby village Abu Rawash. The Abu Rawash pyramid was built by Djedefre, the successor to Khufu.
It was originally thought that this pyramid was never completed. But recent archaeological excavations show that this pyramid was not only completed, It is more or less of the same size as that of the Pyramid of Menkaure, which is the third largest of the Giza pyramids. Abu Rawash is located near a major crossroad. The stones are easily accessible from that area.
Structure of Abu Rawash:
The royal pyramid stood at the center of the complex. It has the burial chamber of Djedefre's predecessor Kheops and Snofru. However, Djedefre built his chamber nearly 20 meters below the ground. The reason behind this is not known. A 49 meter long corridor leads to the ground level and acts as the entrance to the pyramid. The entrance is located in the north. It is traditional to have entrance at the northern side.

A smaller satellite pyramid is located at the southwest of the main pyramid. The mortuary temple, on the other hand, is situated towards the east. The temple is has a mudbrick finish and the art work available there shows that the work was totally hasty. The reign of Djedefre was quite short and he died unexpectedly. His successor, Khefren, may have taken up the decision to complete the complex soon so that the funerary monument can be started without any delay. Abu Rawash attracts tourists from all over the globe. Make sure to visit this pyramid while on tour to Egypt.
