Pyramids of Dahshur

The tourists who come to Egypt are always attracted with its rich history. It was the legacy of the ancient Egyptian civilization to preserve their Kings in the stone coffins and keep them inside the Pyramids. Throughout the generations, a number of Pharoah Kings are being buried in these Pyramids. The Pyramids of Dahshur are also considered to be of immense historical importance.

The Black Pyramid at Dahshur is one of the biggest Pyramids of the country which houses the body of the great pharoah king Amenemhat III who ruled from 1855-1808 BC during the Middle Kingdom period. This Black Pyramid is one of the three pyramids at Dahshur which have been able to retain its structure. The interior passageways and chambers of the Black Pyramid are comparatively more intact than any other Pyramids of Dahshur.

This Pyramid is built on a weak foundation of hard clay and moreover it was built primarily with mud-brick and less stonework. It is believed that it was the first pyramid with burial chambers that shelters both a pharoah and his queens. The archaeologists have found bones of both queen Aat and his second wife, Neferuptah, in their burial chambers. The Red Pyramid comes in the list of well known Pyramids of Dahshur which represents an ideal Pyramid. It is still noted as the third tallest pyramid only after the two largest at Giza.

Those willing t visit the Red Pyramid have to travel a greater distance from Cairo. The tourists find it convenient to access this Pyramid from Giza and south of Saqqara as it is about 25 kilometers and 10 kilometers away respectively. As it is among the reputed Pyramids of Dahshur, a good number of visitors make it a point to visit here. If you have the experience of moving inside the Pyramid, you will know that there are three chambers inside the pyramid having a single corridor.

In the list of Pyramids at Dahshur, the Bent Pyramid is quite an interesting one to visit. Although this Pyramid is older than the Black Pyramid, the Red Pyramid and many other Pyramids in Egypt yet much of the outer limestone covering has remained intact. For the visitor’s knowledge, the Pyramid is built by the pharoah Sneferu, about 2,600 BC. The huge size of the Bent Pyramid makes it the third-highest in all of Egypt. The tourists can look forward to visit 8 other Pyramids of Dahshur, which have not been able to attract a large number of visitors.
