The Step Pyramid of Djoser

Constructed during 2750 BCE, the Step Pyramid of Djoser still remains an epitome of beauty. Having a height of 62 meters (203 ft), this pyramid was built for the burial of Pharaoh Djoser by his vizier Imhotep. The Step Pyramid of Djoser is located at the Saqqara necropolis, northwest of the city of Memphis. The pyramid is considered to be the central feature of the large mortuary complex. The complex which surrounds the Step Pyramid of Djoser comprises an outer wall. It is 10.5 meters high and built of limestone. There are 15 doorways, but the visitors can enter only through the real entrance.

While you intend to visit the pyramid, you have to enter through the actual entrance which has 2 massive stone doors.Southern Tomb is near the Step Pyramid and it is a close imitation of the underground structures under the pyramid. The Great Court lies between the Southern Tomb and the Step Pyramid.

It is commonly believed that this large open area used to be the place for performing various ceremonies of kingship. Visiting this court is also the top priority for the people on tier visit to the Step Pyramid of Djoser.

The Festival Complex is also close to the Step Pyramid of Djoser where the Pharoah kings used to chase the sacred bull around the courtyard and catch it by the tail. This was known as the sed festival. The Mortuary Temple and its huge hall, which has a flat –ceiling also attracts the attention of the tourists.
