The Pyramid of Ibi |
|
Qakare IbiIbi was among the greatest Pharoah Kings of Egypt. He was the ruler of the 8th dynasty, who ruled during the 1st intermediate period. The Pyramid of Ibi is comparatively a small Pyramid which lies near the causeway east of the pyramid of Pepi II. History says that Ibi ruled only for two years. Much of the pyramid is destroyed and in the present times only the relics can be seen.
This badly ruined pyramid of the 8th Dynasty king Ibi is noted as the last pyramid. The visitors from Cairo can have an easy access to the Pyramid of Ibi located in the Southern part of Saqqara. Unlike many other Pyramids in Egypt, this Pyramid does not boast of a colossal height. This historical architecture stands amidst the relics of the other monuments adjacent to it. As you travel to the pyramid of Pepi II, you can expect to get the true essence of the history of this place.
The pyramid of Qakare Ibi was constructed on a low knoll near the causeway of the pyramid of Pepi II. The Pyramid has a base length of 31.5 meters and an estimated height of 21 meters. Like many other Pyramids in Egypt, various research works have been conducted on this Pyramid. The inscription in red ochre ink on limestone blocks of the core says ‘Prince of Libya’. The core of the Pyramid of Ibi was made of small stones and presently only piles of mud and limestone chips can be seen.
As you move inside the Pyramid, you will find the internal structure is built in close imitation of the Old Kingdom royal pyramids. There is a downward passage and a burial chamber inside it. The sarcophagus lies in the west of the burial chamber and it is held by the huge granite block. The archaeologists have found some inscriptions with Pyramid Texts in this chamber.

Unlike the mortuary temples of the Old Kingdom pyramid complexes, the visitors have to enter the Ibi's chapel from the north. As you enter the through the entrance, you have to pass through an antechamber which give an access to the offering hall. During your trip to Egypt make sure that you visit the Pyramid of Ibi. Every year, a large number of interested visitors come here to explore something different from this place.
