Among the Ancient Egyptian Pyramids of Giza, the Khafre’s Pyramid is the second largest. It is basically the tomb of Khafre, the pharaoh of Egypt’s fourth dynasty. Along with its historical significance, it is a popular tourist attraction as well. Khafre’s Pyramid is popular among local as well as international tourists.
Size of Khafre’s Pyramid:
The base of Khafre’s Pyramid spreads over an area of 215.25 meters. Its total height is of 143.5 meters. Each of the Limestone block used for building Khafre’s Pyramid weighs around 2 tons. The side angles of this pyramid is 53o 10', which is much steeper than that of Khufu’s pyramid.
History of Khafre’s Pyramid:
It is believed that during its initial stage the stones of the pyramid was robbed. Later, again during the 18th dynasty time, the stones of Khafre’s Pyramid were stolen for building a temple in Heliopolis. As per Ibn Abd as-Salaam, an Arabian historian, Khafre’s Pyramid was opened in the year 1372. However, it was not explored before 2nd March 1818 by Giovanni Belzoni.
Contraction of Khafre’s Pyramid:
At the base of this pyramid, huge stones are used. However, as the height of the pyramid increases, the size of the stones became smaller. At the apex, the stones are as small as 50 cm. Near to its base; the stones used are mainly very rough and irregular. In its middle portion, the stones are narrower and regular is shape. It is only in Khafre’s Pyramid’s top third part that casing stones are used. At its bottom pink granite is used, whereas, Torah Limestone forms its top most parts.

Interiors of Khafre’s Pyramid:
The burial chamber of Khafre’s Pyramid can be reached via two entrances. One is placed at a height of 11.54 meters and the other at the base of the pyramid. A spacious chamber has its entrance at its western side. As per beliefs, this place was used as a storage area, for storing offerings and equipments used for burial. Numerous passages and chambers are present inside the Khafre’s Pyramid.
