Menkaure's Pyramid

Menkaure's Pyramid, situated on the Giza Plateau, is one of the popular tourist destinations in Egypt. Menkaure's Pyramid located on the southwest of Cairo is the tomb of Menkaure, the Pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty in Egypt. The pyramid, which invites tourists from all corners of the world has been designated as one of the three prominent pyramids of Giza.

Menkaure's Pyramid, is situated in the Giza necropolis, with the Great Pyramid of Khufu and Pyramid of Khafre within its close proximity. Menkaure's Pyramid is the smallest of the three. The exact time of construction of this pyramid of Giza has not yet been discovered. However the construction of the pyramid was completed sometimes around 26th century B.C..

Menkaure's Pyramid
constructed with granite and limestone stands on a base of about 103.4 meters. The original height of the pyramid was 66.5 meters, but it has been reduced to 62 meters in the recent years. The angle of inclination of the pyramid, one of the major tourist attractions of Egypt, is 51 0 20'25”.

Richard William Howard Vyse, an Egyptologist and anthropologist, discovered a wooden coffin with Menkaure's name inscribed on it during his tour to Egypt in 1835. Radiocarbon tests conducted on the bones reveal that it goes back to 2000 years. The coffin is now regarded as a substitute coffin of the Saite period.
Vyse also noticed a sarcophagus or a stone receptacle for corpse. The sarcophagus, provided vital information of the contemporary era but unfortunately at present it is under the Mediterranean Sea. The coffin, which is now showcased at the British Museum was transported on a ship.

So if you are planning to visit Egypt during your next holiday, include Menkaure's Pyramid in your list of tourist spots. The historic pyramid will acquaint you with the interesting details of the bygone era.
