The Pyramid of Merenre

It was a part of the Egyptian civilization to build Pyramids and preserve the dead bodies of their kings inside them. There is a large number of Egyptian Pyramids located in different parts of the country. The Pyramid of Merenre is a renowned Pyramid which houses the body of the pharaoh king Merenre. In the present times, the Pyramid can hardly be recognized as most of its part has turned into rubble. The Pyramid of Merenre at South Saqqara is not much visible as compared to the other nearby monuments.

Since it is located quite deep in the desert and at the southwest edge of the necropolis, few visitors venture out to visit this age-long Pyramid. The Pyramid was earlier hailed as ‘Merenre's beauty shines’. This is one of the Pyramids in Egypt, which is not being excavated to the detail. Those who are on their tour to Egypt do look forward to visit some of the popular Pyramids. The Pyramid of Merenre can be entered from the north side which is followed by a descending corridor. The first corridor leads to the second corridor. The visitors can see a barrier made up of three huge granite blocks.

This corridor leads to an antechamber. As the interested visitors enter through the chamber, they will encounter the burial chamber. The burial chamber of The Pyramid of Merenre has a sarcophagus on the decorated wall. The interior of the Pyramid is a wonderful place for exploration. The ceiling was decorated with astronomical theme with white stars on a black background. The burial equipment includes two alabaster shells and a small wooden knob of a chest.

Merenre’s Pyramid was examined by Perring in the 1830s and discovered white limestone casing blocks which no longer exists today. Much later in the 1880s, Maspero accessed the subterranean chambers of the pyramid.

The visitors must know that the Pyramid of Merenre was built with different materials like pink granite from Aswan, alabaster from Hatnub, and dark greywacke from Ibhat.

Although we do not know much about the pyramid's mortuary temple, yet it has been found out that the ground plan of the interior of the pyramid which was same with that of Pepi I's pyramid. The Pyramid of Merenre has been excavated and the mummy of a child is found. There was a huge debate about the Mummy. Some argued that it belonged to king Merenre, but that did not seem to be authentic as he was a king of the 6th Dynasty. The visitors can expect to travel to the place by hiring the Taxis from the city center.
