Christianity

Christianity is one of the prominent religions in Egypt, embraced and practised by only 10-15% of the population. A large section of the Christian community in Egypt belong to the the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, founded by Saint Mark in the 1st century C.E.. Islam is the state religion of the country and more than 80% of the Egyptian population belong to Muslim community. But all people in the country irrespective of their religion are free to practice their own religion.

The emergence of Christianity in Egypt is as old as the religion itself. Most historians are of the opinion that Apostle Saint Mark was the first Christian theologian to preach Christianity in the country. Christianity in Egypt dates back to first century. Besides Saint Mark, other Christian saints like Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Saint Alexander, Saint Anthony of Egypt, Saint Cyril, Saint Maurice and Saint Shenouda also propagated the religion.

As per the records of the Coptic Orthodox Church, nearly 13 million Egyptians have accepted their membership. The institution which is currently lead by Pope Shenouda III follows the Pope and Patriarch of All Africa on the Holy See of Saint Mark. The hierarchy of the Bishops and other religious heads are entitled to the principle and practice of Christianity as followed in the country.
  • There are 54 Dioceses in the country and outside in addition to 51 Diocesan Bishops.
  • There are 9 Auxiliary Bishops with 2 Dioceses in Egypt and 6 assistants to the Pope in Metropolitan Archdiocese in Cairo.
Christianity in Egypt is categorized into other denominations apart from the Coptic Orthodox Church.
  • The Coptic Evangelical Church is the Protestant Church of the country with 7,50,000-8,00,000 members.
  • The Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria is the Eastern Orthodox Church of the country which has around 2,50,000- 3,00,000 members. However a large section of the members are Greek. Other members are of European and American descent.
  • The coptic Catholic Church is the an Eastern Catholic Church with members around 7,00,000.
  • There are about 1,25,000 Egyptians who belong to the Melkite Greek Catholic Church.
  • People who are the followers of Roman Catholic Church have French, Italian or Maltese origin.
  • There are about 45,000-50,000 people in the country who follow the principles of Armenian Apostolic Church.
  • 10,000-15,000 Egyptians follow The Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East.
The Armenian Catholic Church, the maronite Church, the Chaldean Church, the Syriac Catholic Church and the Syriac Orthodox Church also have members in Egypt.
