Important Religions in Egypt

The co existance of various religions in Egypt give us an insight to the social life of Egyptians. Egypt is a Muslim country as 85-90% of the population is Muslim by religion. Besides Islam, Christianity and Judaism are the other important religions in Egypt. One of the interesting factor about the religious life in Egypt is that people of different community reside here in complete harmony.

Islam is the most predominant among the important religions in Egypt as majority of the population has embraced this faith. However most of the Muslims residing in this country are Sunni, only a few follow the faith of Shiite. A large section of the Sunni Muslims are inclined to Sufi orders. The most prominent institutions of the Sunni is located in Egypt. Al Azhar University established in 970 C.E. is one of the ancient Islamic university in the world, that offers courses for higher studies.

However people belonging to different social strata follow the ideals and principles of Islam in different ways. The elite society usually follow the principles which are quite different to that followed by the religious preachers and embraced by the peasants and those belonging to the lower section of the society. The Muslims in Egypt are divided in their opinion of the ideals of the religion. Some people believe that their religion is the personal faith and they are free to follow in their own way.

The constitution in Egypt declares that all new legislations should be in accordance with the laws of Islam. The state controls the Hannafi School of Sunni Islam. On the contrary the Wizzaret Al Awkaf is entitled to all the mosques and also supervizes of Muslim ecclesiastics.

Training sessions are organized in the vocational schools and also Al Azhar university. Sunni Islams are supported by the ministry of Egypt. They are also entitled to announce judgements on the different issues related to Islam.

Christianity is the one of the important religions in Egypt. The majority of the Christians dwelling in Egypt belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria which was founded in 1st century C.E.. The church established by Saint Mark has 13 million members in Egypt alone. The Coptic Evangelical Church has nearly 8,00,000 members whereas the Coptic Catholic Church has 7,00,000 members.

Egypt was also the dwelling place of the Jews. Most of the Jews, who resided in Egypt were Karaites. However in the recent years the Jews residing in the country has turned to a minority community.
