The history of Bahri Mamluks

the history of Bahri Mamluks began in Egypt when they first came to Egypt as the soldiers of sultan Saladin who was the founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty in the year 1174. after the death of the sultan his sons tried to divide the dynasty among themselves. Grabbing the opportunity to rule the country of Egypt Al Adil, the brother of Saladin imprisoned and killed most of the heirs to the throne. Later he rose to power and recruited the defeated Mamluk in his troop. This way the Ayyubid Sultanate became more and more dependent on the power of the mamluks. The mamluks , known as Bahri Mumluks too began to take active part in the politics of the country.

In the month of June in the year 1249, during the seventh Crusade the French lead by King Louis IX came to Egypt. They landed in the country and occupied Damietta. At n first the Egyptian troop was defeated by the French. Soon after the death of the then Emperor As Salih Ayyub his son and later his dear wife Shajar Al Durr or Shajarat ul Durr with the help of the Mamluk support was able to plan a counter attack.

The commanders of Bahri Mamluk troop not only defeated the French but also captured the French King. Later due to the tremendous political pressure for a male ruler Shajar al Durr had to marry a Bahri Mamluk commander named Aybak. When Aybak was assassinated in his bath, Qutuz, the vice regent of Egypt took his position and founded the Bahri Mamluk dynasty in Egypt.

The Bahri mamluks fought bravely with the Mongols and were in power till the year 1382.
