Graeco is a Roman museum which was created in the year1892. Firstly it was build inside one small building in Rosetta Street in a 5-room apartment. Later in the year 1895 it was transferred to another building that only had eleven rooms. Presently it is located near Gamal Abdul Nasser Street. Graeco-Roman Museum comprises of a lot of pieces from the 3rd century BC such as sculpture of Apis in black granite, the sacred bull of the Egyptians, mummies, sarcophagus and tapestries. In other words Graeco-Roman Museum offers lot of objects and sculptures that offer us a clear view of Graeco-roman civilization in contact with Egypt.
Graeco—Roman Museum of Alexandria offers a vast collection which was gathered together over hundred years. Graeco—Roman Museum had already celebrated its centenary. More over the donations from wealthy Alexandrians as well as of excavations led by successive directors of the institution, both within the town and in its environs in association with the Organization of Antiquities at Cairo (particularly those of the Pharaonic period) and from various digs undertaken at the beginning of the century in The Fayoum and at Benhasa has enriched Graeco—Roman Museum.

The Museum consists of 27 halls and an attractive garden. The garden offers an excellent introduction to the Greek and Roman art of Egypt. Graeco—Roman Museum of Alexandria is housed within historic building. The beauty of the house consists of neo-classical facade of six columns and pediment bears the large Greek inscription, ‘MOYXEION’.
The museum is opened for 8 hours per day and 7 days per week. It is opened from 9am to 5pm, but
Graeco-Roman Museum is subjected to a brief closure for Friday prayers between 11:30am and 1:30pm.

During the month of Ramadan the closing time is brought forward one hour. Tickets can be bought from the ticket office situated to the left before entering the front door. Additional charges are required for cameras and videos but tripods and flash are not permitted. The cost of entry or tickets is different for the tourist and that of Egyptians.
