The most ancient and biggest of all the three pyramids in Cairo, is the Pyramid of Cheops. The foremost and the only existing member among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Pyramid of Cheops, is thought to be have been made around 2589-2566 B.C, over a time span of 20 years. It was built for the purpose of protecting the body of the Egyptian king Khufu or Cheops, who was a Forth Dynasty pharaoh. Pyramid of Cheops, is the major section of a compound which comprised a large number of buildings such as two burial temples for paying tribute to Khufu, three less big pyramids for the wives of Khufu, a miniature pyramid, a ramp to link the two temples and small mastaba burial chambers for the noblemen.
The total weight of the Pyramid of Cheops should have been around 6,000,000 tons, each stone weighing almost 2.5 tons with a total height of 482 feet. Several calculations have been done for determining the man power required to build the Pyramid of Cheops. According to the famous Greek historian Herodotus, who belonged to the 5th century B.C, calculated that over 100,000 laborers toiled on for over 20 years to complete the construction of the Pyramid of Cheops. Another belief is that peasants who were incapable of working on their lands which were flooded by the Nile worked to construct the Pyramid of Cheops.

Latest proofs have revealed that the laborers were paid for their work, which means that the whole system was organized to a great extent. In fact, not much can be known about the Pyramid of Cheops. Before anything can be understood by the archeologists, it was robbed. King Cheops was thought to be very wealthy and reputed as the pyramid which was built for him was really a massive structure.
