|
Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa is one of the most compact and graceful monuments in Cairo, Egypt. In fact, it is one of the most remarkable evidences of the excellence of Mumluk architecture. Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa was specially made in 1356 by Sultan Hassan bin Mohammad bin Qala’oun both for prayers as well as religious education of all the four legal branches of Sunni Islam-Maliki, Hanbali, Hanafi and Shafi, in separate areas. The monument was built over a period of seven years, the erection being initiated in 1356 and completed in 1363. About 300 persons were killed by the collapse of one of the minarets and the building of the Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa was funded by the properties of the dead persons. The Sultan was killed before the completion of the construction, his body being lost forever. At present, the bodies of Sultan’s two sons are kept in the large mausoleum meant for his burial.

The madrassa at Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa was initially created by Saladin to dominate the non-orthodox Muslim communities. In fact, Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa is believed by many as the most remarkable Islamic structure in Egypt. Being made of stone, the Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa share similarity with the Ibn Toulon Mosque. Every part of the mosque is independent and displays precision of finishing and control. The plan is based on traditional cruciform for making separate sections for the Sunni schools.
The front wall of the Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa is 76 meters in length and 6 meters in height.
