Egypt is one of the most populated countries of Africa. The majority of its approximated 78 million people (2007) live adjacent to the banks of the Nile River where the only cultivable land is found. Large areas of land constitute part of the Sahara Desert and are less inhabited. Around half of Egypt's population can be found in urban areas, with the majority of the people found near greater Cairo, Alexandria and other major cities in the Nile Delta.
