The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx

The pyramids typify ancient Egypt, but surprisingly, the biggest was constructed during a short span of time early in a civilization that lasted for along time.

Historical Background of the mystic Pyramids:
The most remarkable achievements of the pyramid builders were the Pyramids of Giza, built near the capital city of Memphis for the fourth dynasty kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure who reigned through 2589-2504 BC (Before Christ).
Among the three, only Menkaure's Pyramid is seen today without any of its original polished limestone casing, with Khafre's Pyramid holding on to a striking exhibition of casing stones at its top while Khufu's Pyramid preserves a more limited collection at its base. Interestingly, this pyramid appears larger than the adjoining Khufu Pyramid because of its more raised location, and the steeper angle of inclination of its structure – but actually it is smaller in both height and volume. 25th century BC witnessed the most active phase of construction here.

The Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza is the largest of all the pyramids and was considered by the ancient Greeks as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
It is said that the Great Pyramid of Khufu consists of 2.3 million stone blocks, although this figure is arguable. The four sides of the pyramid are accurately pointed to the cardinal points of the compass.

Details of the Great Sphinx:

In a depression to the southern side of Khafre's pyramid at Giza near Cairo sits a colossal creature with the head of a human and body of a lion. This massive statue, known as the Great Sphinx; this is a national symbol of both modern and ancient Egypt. It has captured the imagination of poets, philosophers, adventurers and tourists for thousands of years and has also animated a wealth of hypothesis about its age, its meaning, and the secrets that it might hold.

Now –a-days it is certain, that it is not the keeper of long lost knowledge, or ancient technologies, as has been popularly speculated over all these years. There are surely no hidden chambers holding the secrets of Atlantis between its paws but the Great Sphinx is in reality grand and awesome enough even without its speculated mysteries. It is a massive symbol of ancient Egyptian kingship, perhaps related to solar worship.
