Ancient Egypt, witnessed the power of the god Amun of Thebes, which gradually increased during the early New Kingdom, and after the short maltreatment led by Akhenaten, it rose to its top. In the reign of Ramesses III, more than two thirds of the property owned by the temples belonged to Amun, manifested by the stupendous buildings at Karnak. Although in a desolated condition, no site in Egypt is more awesome than Karnak. It is the largest temple compound ever built by man, and exhibits the combined accomplishment of many generations of ancient builders. The Temple of Karnak comprises of three main temples, smaller enclosed temples, and several outer temples located about three kilometers north of Luxor, Egypt situated on a roughly 247 acres of land. This massive complex was built and elaborated over a period of thirteen hundred years. The three main temples of Mut, Montu and Amun are enfolded by enormous brick walls.

Open Air Museum
The Open Air Museum is located across from the Great Court, on the opposite side of the entrance of Ramesses III Temple at Karnak. It has an accumulation of monuments that was discovered during an excavation inside the third pylon. Temple of Amun, the main complex, is situated in the center of the entire complex.

The Temple of Monthu is to the north of the Temple of Amun, and next to it, on the inside of the in closure wall is the Temple of Ptah, while the Temple of Mut is to the south. There is a small Temple dedicated to Khonsu, and next to it, an even smaller Temple of Opet. Actually, there are a several smaller temples and chapels spread about Karnak, such as the Temple of Osiris Hek-Djet (Heqadjet), which is inside the enclosure wall of the Temple of Amun. Hypostile Hall in the Great Temple of Amun houses several good performances of sound and light show in the night.
