Medieval Cairo |

Background of the city:
Cairo in Egypt is home to more than 16 million people. The appeal of this place is that it’s exotic and chaotic, dusty yet beautiful. And doubtlessly the most occupying section of the city is Medieval (Islamic) Cairo; walking through its streets we get transported back to the historical time of Cairo's past in the Islamic period, a world occupied by thousand years old market, old mosques and medieval forts.
Travel through the roads of medieval Cairo:
You can start your journey from the Islamic Museum, which can give some relevant knowledge and resources before entering Islamic Cairo. Walking northeast on Port Said street ,where it intersects with Sharia al-Azhar, and then to the right takes you to the carpet market and then the Mosque-Madrassa of al-Ghouri and then his Mausoleum (the black and white buildings, circa 1505 AD), which are both worthy of paying a visit. This complex is an aesthetic reminder of the Mamluk period of Egypt, when slaves were kings. Sufi performances, held in the mausoleum are the highlighting point of this place. This whirling dance is an experience in itself for any visitor.
The Wikala of al-Ghouri, very well preserved in all these years is just east of the complex, serves as a theater and concert hall, alongside with art galleries.
The al-Azhar Mosque founded in 970 AD is one of Cairo's oldest mosques, and more importantly, it is the world's oldest university.
Midan Hussein, was the epicenter of medieval Cairo and presently, used for holding Islamic religious festivals.
Mosque of Sayyidna al-Hussein is a comparatively new construction as compared to the other places of medieval Egypt but is regarded very sacred site to Muslims and non-Muslims are not allowed to enter here.
The al-Azhar Park is a place which offers an excellent view of the adjacent areas and is a nice resting place at the top of a hill or lakeside cafes.
Other places worthy of visit includes:
- City of the Dead
- Mosque of Amir Qurqumas
- Complex of Sultan Ashraf
- Mosque of as-Salih Tala'i
- Mosque of al-Maridani
Shopping:
The Khan el-Khalili is a place where one can find a large range of commodities from statues to papyrus art. This market, established in the 14th century is the best and the least expensive place to buy different kinds of goods.

Even the local people buy their ordinary household needs from here.
