Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art |
|
If Egypt is considered as the cradle of civilization, then the Egyptian city of Luxor can rightly be said to be the reflection of culture and rich creativity that belonged to those times of ancient history – the time of Antiquity. Although much of the great art works have been lost to the passage of time, much more still remains, baffling the human mind at the thought of the sheer grandeur of architecture that Luxor holds in her lap, more so, battling fiercely and successfully the wraths of natural forces. Of the numerous art works that have been preserved till date, some of them are housed in the world renowned Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art, located at a distance of a few kilometers to the north of the Temple of Luxor.
Opened to the public in the year 1975, Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art is quite different to and a little less bewildering than the Egyptian Museum not only in its design but also the collections gathered for display primarily dating back to the Predynastic era, taking you on a enthralling artistic tour right up to the time of the Islamic era. Some recent discovered objects from the site of the ancient city of Thebes are also found in this Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art. The rooms in which the objects and sculptures have been placed are spacious providing a tourist enough space to move around and view every artifact with all attention and time.

The entire Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art has two floors and on your first entrance through the main door, you can expect to be greeted by the world famous head of a cow goddess, not found anywhere else in the world. As you look around, you will find numerous other unique exhibits such as statues of Thebes’s kings, queens, high authorities, offering tables, papyri, mummy case, furniture belonging to tombs, numerous jewelry and funerary items. The most striking artifacts are the objects from the tomb of Tutankhamun not even found in the Cairo Museum and a wall from the temple of Amenhotep IV. Apart from the main building, an extension has been built adjacent to it dedicated to the great military history of the Egyptian civilization as well as some other objects which remained buried and kept out of human sight for more than two thousand years.

The well lit floors of the Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art takes you back all the thousand years and as you look at them as an observer, these objects will appear to you to be as significant and enchanting as the ‘Grecian Urn’ had seemed to John Keats – with each exhibit beckoning you to unravel its mystery with its “unheard melodies”, each having a tale to tell in silent whispers – meant for your ears alone!
