Major ports along the Mediterranean Sea

Alexandria Port or the Port of Alexandria is considered to be the most important port in the country of Egypt. It is placed on Nile Delta's West Verge, within the Mediterranean Sea and Alexandria's Mariut Lake. More than three quarters of the nation's foreign trade is handled by this noteworthy port, and as such plays a significant role in earning foreign revenues as well. This noted port possesses two harbors, the East and the West harbor. The two harbors are parted by a peninsula that is T-shaped. The East harbor of the port is shallow, and for this reason, it is not used for navigational purposes. For commercial shipping, the West harbor is the appropriate one. The West harbor has formed as a result of two meeting breakwaters.

Alexandria Port is among the oldest and most noted ports in the world as its root goes back to nearly 4000 years. Constructed in 1900 BC, this port has become an integral part of the social life of Egypt. After Alexander the Great arrived at Egypt in 331 BC, the port recovered from the state of decline that it faced under the rule of the Pharos. The port is separated into six zones, according to their use.

Damietta Port is located to the west of 8.5 km of the river Nile, and seventy kilometers from Port Said. The port is bounded by an imaginary line that connects the eastern and western extraneous breakwaters. The Entrance Channel of the port is 11.4 km in length, 15m in depth and 300 m in width. The port also consists of a Barge Channel that connects the dock to the estuary of Nile.

Port Said Port and Marsa Matruh are equally important ports and harbors along the Mediterranean Sea.
