The major port cities or harbor towns along the Nile includes Aswan and Asyut. These two towns are very much parts of the Egyptian culture and society.

Aswan: It is a port city located in the southern part of Egypt, and it is the capital city of the Aswan Governorate. The city is located on the eastern bank of the Nile River, and is one of the most busiest market town and tourist center in the country. Aswan comprises the island of Elephantine. This city is considered to be among the driest places in the entire world where human beings live. Rainfall occurs after years of dryness. The city, in the ancient times, was known as Swenet. Above the city of Aswan, the Nile River is almost 3000 yards in width. Its is a frontier town, and the Nile flows for over 750 miles without any bar, till the extreme point in northern Egypt. From Aswan, it would take 21 to 28 days to make a voyage to the city of Alexandria. Besides passenger movement, freight carriage is also facilitated by the presence of the city on the bans of the Nile.

Asyut: Asyut is another city located on the banks of the Nile River. The city boasts of a rich history and many famous people have graced the land of this noted city. In Asyut, the highest number of Coptic Christians live. It has also been reported that Virgin Mary appeared in this city. The city houses the University of Asyut, one of the most prominent universities in the country of Egypt. The lives of the people are intertwined with the Nile River.
