Pipelines |
|
Pipelines have been laid in various parts of Egypt to channel crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products to various refineries set up in the country. Pipelines for crude oil run to length of 6666 km, for petroleum products, the Pipelines cover a total length of 596 km, and for natural gas, 460 km of natural gas Pipelines have been laid. As the country is a noted gas producer among the various African countries, the Pipelines are very important. Even for crude oil and petroleum products, pipelines are used for their transportation. The Sumed Pipeline and the Suez Canal are the most convenient routes for oil shipments in Persian Gulf region. For this particular reason, the country of Egypt has become an extremely important strategic point in the energy markets of the world.
Sumed Pipeline: It is one of the major Pipelines running through the country of Egypt. It is also referred as the Suez-Mediterranean pipeline. It is 320 km in length, starting from Ain Sukhna terminal to Sidi Keirr. The Ain Sukhna terminal is located on the Gulf of Suez, and Sidi Keirr is on the Mediterranean. It is a very good alternative to the noted Suez Canal for the transportation of oil from the region of Persian Gulf to the region of the Mediterranean. This pipeline comprises two pipelines that run parallel. These pipelines have a diameter of 42 inches, and the total capacity of Sumed Pipeline is about 2.5 million bbl/d. The owner of the pipeline is Arab Petroleum Pipeline Company, which formed by the coming together of EGPC, ADNOC, Saudi Aramco, QGPC, and three companies of Kuwait.
Other pipelines
The country of Egypt has made significant progress in oil and natural gas export to various parts of the world. The construction of a crude oil pipeline connecting Libya and Egypt is also one the cards. The 600 km, 150,000 bbl/d is likely to transport crude oil from Libya to Egypt, in the city of Alexandria. This crude oil would be refined and sold in the country of Egypt.

The reserves of natural gas in the country of Egypt is quite significant. Due to the discovery of natural gas in the Nile delta region and the Mediterranean region, Egypt has been able to supply natural gas to various parts of the world. Egypt's top natural gas producer is The International Egyptian Oil Company (IEOC). With Jordan, Egypt trades natural gas through a gas pipeline. All these Pipelines are very important part of the economic structure of the country.
