Railways form the core part of the entire transportation system in the country of Egypt, along with road, air and water transportation. At present the railway system of the country is approximately 5,063 kilometers in length, and it is controlled by the Egyptian National Railways or ENR. A remarkable 500 million travelers and 12 million tonnes of freight are carried by the Egyptian National Railways. Egyptian National Railways has plans to modernize the total railway network and work on improving the standards of safety.
Egyptian National Railways: Egyptian National Railways is managed by the Egyptian Railway Authority (ERA). The two major routes are Cairo-Helwan and Cairo-Heliopolis. Egyptian National Railways focus its system primarily on the delta region of River Nile, with lines originating from the city of Cairo. From Cairo, a railway route connects Aswan, located in the Upper Egypt region. Most of the rail engines are driven by diesel, and sixty-three kilometers of the lines are electrified.
Passenger Trains: The system of Railways operates air conditioned trains, generally having first and second class service. There are non-airconditioned trains having second and third class. The two major hubs of the railway network in the country of Egypt are Cairo and Alexandria. In commuter trains as well as third class commuter trains, the fares are not very high as it is seen as a social service.
