History
The first major roads in the country of Egypt were mainly constructed to facilitate the transport of huge blocks of limestone to the various sites where pyramids were being built. The noted Greek historian Herodotus gives appreciable credit to the ancient Egyptians for their idea of road construction, particularly for the purpose of transportation. Archaeologists have found evidences which show that the road building process mainly happened to Cairo's southwest, from 2600 BC to 2200 BC. This indicates that the the people of Egypt learned the art of road construction quite early. Along with the railways, the Regional highways in the country form an integral part of the transportation system in Egypt. Regional highways contribute a lot to the promotion of tourism in the country.
